| A BRIEF OUTLINE OF TEA CULTURE |

After the discovery of tea in 1823, people migrated to Assam in search of Work. They are mainly from Orissa, undivided Bihar, undivided Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. In due course of time they became an integral part of vast Assamese community and popularly known as "Tea Tribes". But still they have a cultural diversity, as their original habitations are different. |

To mention a few are "Fagua"- the festival of colour, "Sohorai" which is observed in the night of "Kali puja" and "Gobordhan puja, "Ganesh puja", Tushu puja which is observed in "Magh Bihu" (Makar Sankrantee), Gram puja- a community base festival to worship mother goddess "Kali", "Rath Yatra" of "Bhagaban Jaganath" - generally observed by the people originated from Orissa. But still they observe "Karam Puja" as their main festival. |

The Karam puja is observed on the night of "Bhado Ekadasi " (generally in the month of August). It is basically agriculture related festival and believe that by the blessing of the God "Karam" they will get bumper crops and their family will be saved from evil. More over woman folk pray for better conjugal life. |

The dance perform in the night of Karam Puja is called "Jhumair Nritya". It is basically a group dance perform by the rhythm of "Dholl" and "Madal" by a group of young man and woman.Another popular form of dance is "Danda Nritya" which is performed during the "Fagua" festival. |
