Strength

1. Tinsukia is rich in natural resources like coal/oil etc. The oldest refinery of country is in Tinsukia district at Digboi
which also the head quarters of Assam Oil Division of Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
The coal mines at Margherita, one of the oldest in the country, produces one of the
best quality
coal available in the country today. Both this Industries have given boast to the economy
of area and given lots
of employment directly and also in its anciliary and tertiary sectors.
2. The district also has large numbers of tea gardens, another big source employment
and revenue generation.

3. Tinsukia has 35 nos. of reserve forests with an area of 913.13 sq.km. with various kinds of
flora and fauna.
4. The district has tremendous tourism potential. Dibru Saikhowa national park is
located in the district.
5. Favorable climatic condition and soil type for growing of tea, paddy and horticulture.
This district is famous for orange cultivation.
6. Direct rail connection with rest of the country and DRM Office at Tinsukia.
7. Availability of vast no. of water bodies. Ample scope for Fish production.
8. Location of Brahamaputa river-natural advantage for inland water transportation.

Weaknesses

1. Poor road communication
2. Occurrence of flood.
3. Insufficient power supply.
4. Remoteness of Sadiya Sub-Division from main land.
5. Non availability of suitable marketing facilities for SSI Products
6. Inadequate flow of financial assistance towards the SSI Units from the
financial Institutions
7. The hilly and rocky areas on Sadiya and a part of Margherita Sub-Division create
problems for lifting of under ground water for various activities.

|
1. Ample Scope for establishment of Forest based and Agro based Industries.
2. Potential for development of the district as major tourist destination.
3. Opportunity for setting up of ancillary industries based on Oil, Coal and Tea etc.
4. Establishment of Tea Nursery, Tea Gurdens, Ago and Horticulture Farm on commercial basis.
5. The vast water bodies comprising of Beels, Rivers and Swampy areas open up ample
scope for pisciculture and allied activities.
6. The opportunity for commissioning of inland water transport through Brahmaputra river and its
tributaries for transportation of cargo at low rate.
7. Opening of StilWell Road will develop the district as focal point for international
trade & commerce.

Threats
|
1. The in-adequate infrastructure, occurrence of flood, poor road communication are
the major threat perception
for successful implementation of development schemes.
Considering the existing strength, weakness and potentials of Tinsukia district, a plan
has been prepared in consultation with various development departments taking in to
account the felt
needs of the people of this district.
